Modeling proofreading and editing processes
This project aims to analyze the details of proofreading, revision, and copy-editing practices in humanities journals, in order to develop a theoretical and formal model that can then be implemented in digital environments.
Issues
Revision is often regarded as a trivial task that does not involve the production of meaning. Yet, the tradition of revision is remarkably rich, and its protocols embody complex worldviews and values. Consider, for instance, the multiplicity of typographic symbols used to denote different types of revision actions. Unfortunately, this rich paper-based tradition has been largely ignored, reduced to streamlined, uniform tools in digital environments, most notably in Microsoft Word’s "track changes" feature. A more nuanced modelling of the revision tradition would help restore the full complexity and richness of editorial practices in scholarly journals.
